In 1988 I started visiting a record store ("Melonhead's") in Chattanooga TN, and became friends with the owner. He would frequently comment about the term "Southern Rock" and the circular redundancy it represented to him. I knew before then how the Delta blues flowed into R&B and how that flowed into Rock-n-Roll, but I hadn't understood any of that vis-a-vis Southern Rock. I see now that Southern Rock was to Classic Rock (or 1970's "album rock") what Elvis was to Little Richard or Chuck Berry.
